Watch: If Rudy Giuliani were 'Birdman'...

“Let’s go back one more time, and show them what we’re capable of. Admit it, you’d like to see something terrible happen, so you can save the day.”

That’s what it would sound like if Rudy Giuliani, remembering his 9/11 heyday, went all Birdman. 

Saturday Night Live‘s cold open featured the former New York City mayor (played by Taran Killam) as the hero of the Oscar-winning film about a man (Michael Keaton) haunted by his imagined(?) superhero self. Like in Birdman, the camera follows Giuliani down halls as he runs into his friend (Bobby Moynihan doing his best Zach Galifianakis), his daughter (host Dakota Johnson as the Emma Stone character) and the masked Birdman (Beck Bennett) while he takes a break from an interview with Fox’s Gretchen Carlson.

The Birdman/inner monologue voice goes:

“You were almost president for a few months in 2007. You were the front- runner. You were one of the greats. You were a hero. We were strong, beloved, and our hair rocked.”

Then, Birdman pulls the fire alarm so Giuliani can feel relevant and in control again. We applaud.

Mocked host Gretchen Carlson was a fan of the sketch, and Vanessa Bayer’s portrayal of her:
